How to Sew a Ring Detail Maiju Crop Top
DIY Maiju Crop Top with a Macramé Ring
If you love sewing garments that feel a little special, this simple hack adds a beautiful handmade detail to the Maiju Top sewing pattern. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to sew a ring detail top by attaching a macramé ring to the center edge of Maiju Top.
Instead of finishing the center edge as described in the instructions, you can attach a ring to create a soft gathered opening. It’s a small change, but it completely transforms the look of the top and gives it a modern, bohemian feel.

Why add a macramé ring to your Maiju Crop Top?
There are so many beautiful macramé rings available in different materials and finishes. I ended up using a wooden one simply because I found it in my sewing supplies, but you can choose the one that suits your style best.
One thing to keep in mind is washability. Since the ring will become part of your garment, it’s best to choose a material that can handle washing easily.
The diameter of the ring should be at least 3 cm so there is enough space to comfortably sew the fabric around it and create the gathered effect. The Maiju Top has a 2 cm seam allowance at the center edge, so the ring needs to fit inside that space while still leaving room for the fabric to wrap around it neatly.
If you don’t already have a ring in your sewing supplies, I found some beautiful options on Etsy that could work nicely for this project. They can add such an interesting touch to the top.

Fabrics that work well for a ring detail Maiju Crop Top
This detail works especially well with fabrics that are lightweight and drape nicely, such as:
linen
cotton voile
rayon / viscose
lightweight cotton
soft hemp blends
These fabrics gather beautifully around the ring and create a soft shape without adding bulk.

How to sew the Maiju Top with a macramé ring
Follow the Maiju Crop Top Model B instructions and modify the center edge using the steps below.
Instructions:
Step 1. Prepare the top pieces according to the pattern instructions up to Step 12.
Step 2. After overlocking the center front edges, sew two rows of basting stitches: one 6 mm (1/4") and the other 13 mm (1/2") from the edge. Leave long thread tails for gathering.
Step 3. Take the ring. Fold one center front edge around the ring toward the wrong side of the fabric. Gently pull the basting threads to gather the fabric and adjust the gathers evenly. Pin the fabric around the ring with a 2 cm (0.79”) seam allowance, then sew it in place. Repeat this step for the other center front edge.
Step 4. Then sew the other side in place
Step 5. Sew the ties following the pattern instructions in Steps 15 and 16.
Step 6. Overlock / zig-zag the unsewn edges of the ties. Fold the tie around the ring toward the wrong side of the fabric, then sew it in place.
Step 7. Then sew the other tie in place.
Step 8. Continue sewing the rest of the top following the pattern instructions from Step 19.
This simple modification replaces the original center edge finish and creates a beautiful focal point for the garment.
Styling your finished ring top
Once finished, the macramé ring detail gives the top a unique, elevated design feel while still keeping its handmade charm. It’s a small detail that makes the garment feel unique and personal.
It pairs beautifully with:
relaxed linen trousers

flowing summer outfits
simple everyday looks
